Kids ... I have been putting together a collection of pictures of some of the children I pass by as I walk around town. Of course, the streets are full of kids , most of them just as cute as can be.
Took this one yesterday while down in the barrio. Nearby there was a hotly contested domino game underway which I was taking pictures of, but couldn't resist this little cutie.
She has a mouthful and just look at those eyes.
The other day I was sitting out in front of my apartment and these two guys came pedaling by.
Later he turned around and they stopped to see the pictures I took of them.
I am not sure whether she is so tiny that she makes the hedge look huge or the hedge was actually as large as it appears in this picture.
I shot a picture of this little guy while I was walking in los Charamicos last week. Momma is standing just out of camera range.
Notice the school uniforms. These are the uniforms worn by the kids who attend the private school (Colegio Luis Hess).
These are the uniforms worn by the public school students.
Two young guys down in the barrio.
This little guy was also hovering around close to the domino game yesterday.
Estefany is one of the kids that live close to the apartments where I live. Her mother Vicky has six children who live in an apartment about the size of my little dormitory room. Vicky's 13-year old daughter Yenifer is 9 months pregnant right now. Unbelievable! Would you believe the dominican guy who got her pregnant is long gone?
These two guys were playing in the sidewalk with their mother and father close by.
On Sunday's there are lots and lots of kids at the beach.
Words for the day ... Today I have two words which I learned down in the barrio last night. There is a story to this which I will tell (further down) ... but first the words.
bolsillo ... pocket
tira piedra ... sling shot ... tira = throw and piedra = rock or stone
There is a man who lives close to la familia de Angela. This man lived for several years in New York City so his english is quite good. He has decided to become my spanish teacher. This guy can drink more scotch than anyone I have ever seen. Now to see anyone in this country drinking anything besides beer and rum is very different. Sadly his daily routine starts with his bottle of scotch and finishes into the night no telling how many bottles later. He bought a lottery ticket last night and put it between his heel and his flip flops. Several of us were trying to get him to put the ticket in his pocket, which he finally did. In the process I asked him the meaning of the word pocket which I learned is bolsillo.
Later in the evening he was having an animated argument with one of his friends and he rushed off, later to return with this large sling shot. Sooooo I had to ask how you say sling shot in spanish and it is tira piedra (throw the rock).
Never a dull moment in the barrio.
Stay turned!
