A picture from home and the flora and fauna of Sosua ... reason enough to stay right here through the winter.
Rain, rain, rain and more rain. It has been raining in Sosua for a week now. The good news is between all the raindrops comes the ever-present tropical sunshine. Even better news is what I am missing back home in Missouri (see below).
My sister-in-law sent me several pictures of the very unusual snowstorm that hit Missouri last Friday. The community in which I live received 15 inches of snow. That is more snow that the area usually receives during the entire winter. After the weekend they are still digging out. I much prefer seeing pictures of it than being outside with my snow shovel trying to get my car out of the driveway.
I love the tropical look of the trees and flowers here in la Republica Dominicana. Whenever I am out on my walks, I try to take pictures of the flora and fauna.
There are three different types of trees in this picture.
All of the rain we are getting keeps everything lush and green.
Mango tree
The same tree.
In this picture you can see the mangos on the mango tree and the coconuts on the palm standing next to it.
I am not familiar with the name of this flower, but have seen it growing on all three of the Caribbean islands on which I have lived (Puerto Rico, Dominica and Dominican Republic.
The needles on the pine trees here in the tropics are so fine and soft as compared to the pine trees back in Missouri.
This, I believe, is a croton.
Word For The Day ... helado ... ice cream
To Pronounce ... the h is silent ... ey (like saying hey with a silent h) ... lado (laaa-doe)
Tom at Hamburger Paradise has a new soft ice cream maker. Last night my girlfriend was here for the night. About 9 pm, in the apartment, she asked me to walk across the street to get her an ice cream cone. Except that, of course, she asked me in spanish and I was not familiar with the word helado (ice cream. The process we went through for about 10 minutes was quite comical. Finally after laughing through the entire process she got me to understand what she wanted.
