Wednesday, December 13 (miercoles, 13 de diciembre)

Birthday Report ... First, thanks to those of you who wished me a happy birthday. How thoughtful of you! I especially enjoyed getting phone calls from my kids who are scattered all over the place, but very much in my heart. I especially missed them on my birthday.

I even enjoyed yours John despite the fact that you woke me up at 1 in the morning when it was no longer my birthday. Sorry I couldn't wake up to have much of a conversation. Also thanks for the advice in your e-mail. As usual it will go unheeded ... just like most of the advice I give you.

My oldest son John hates it when I mention him on this blogsite, but I don't care because I am very proud of him ... yesterday he completed his Medical School Step One Board Test, which is a very important test on the road to becoming a doctor. In the next two weeks, he is going to be a father as he and Sherry are expecting sometime shortly after Christmas. I will be a very proud grandpa and will be posting pics if they send them to me.

If I were flush with more money I would fly to Canada and be there for the birth, but alas I am not and will have to stick it out down here where it is 85 degrees every day.

Dominicans at work and at play ... Here are some pictures I have taken over the last couple of weeks. Hope you enjoy them!

These five guys pulled this boat out of the water and all the way up on the beach close to the shops. I was an interested spectator.

This is a very frequent sight these days. Eden Norte (the power company) is going around unhooking all the people who have hooked into the power supply and are stealing electricity (which is probably over half the entire population on this island). Problem is, as soon as they come down off the pole, the people in the neighborhood hook right back up. I don't know how they do this without getting fried.

Tuna on the left and not sure what that is on the right, but it isn't the usual red snapper. Take your pick. Can't vouch for the freshness. The other day I saw this guy walking around with a tuna that had to be over 100 pounds. It was draped over his shoulder. Alas, I didn't have my camera with me.

The agua truck has arrived at Colmado Zoilo. Ever wonder why the government doesn't spend the money to give its people safe water out of the tap so they don't have to buy water?

The motoconchos that spend the day next to the Domino Bar.

I shot this picture last Friday on my walk around los Charamicos. The lady has a big smile, probably because she 'big-dealed' a cerveza from me for taking this picture. She probably is saying, under her breath, "got another gringo sucker." Oh well, I was in a generous mood. Usually I walk away when they ask for money for their picture.

I may have posted this picture before. This guy is selling the holders people put their cell phones in.

Not sure what is up with this work site. Not much work getting done.

I took this picture in El Batey over by the casino. These guys are preparing the footings for a new home being built.

Ever notice whenever you take a picture of a young Dominican, they always get busy with the hand signals which mean ... well I have no idea what they mean since I am way past the 'gangsta' age.

Finally, the ever-present group of motoconchos at the intersection, next to the fruit stand on the main road.

Word for the day ... cochecito ... stroller

After yesterday, I will forever know this word.

My girlfriend and I went to Puerto Plata to a place called los Molino (a huge outdoor market/bazaar), and shopped for a cochecito for her baby.

She is such a sweet girl. She and I have been together for almost a year now (December 16). When I met her, unknown to her or to me, she was newly pregnant. As usual, the father hit the road when he heard she was pregnant. She and I went through much of her pregnancy together and Carolita arrived September 16.

So I am $2300 pesos poorer, but the baby has a really cool stroller and it was money well spent because the family certainly couldn't afford to buy one. They barely have enough for milk and pampers.

Stay Tuned!
