A Day At The Beach ...

I can't believe it. I had been here in Sosua for almost three weeks and had yet to visit the beach. So yesterday afternoon I took my camera and spent the day walking up and down la playa.

On Sunday the streets of Sosua are very quiet. All the activity is at the beach. On Sunday's busloads of Dominicans come to Sosua Beach from all over the northern part of the island. Yesterday there were far more Dominicans at the beach than tourists.

The following are some of the pictures I took ...

Coco's Beach Bar is the entrance to the beach.

There are 100s of small shops lining the back portion of the beach. In addition to the shops there are little restaurants and bars, mostly owned by expatriates. It is fun to grab a table somewhere and watch all the foot traffic going up and down the walkway.

I stopped at this little tienda and looked at the Haitian artwork. The proprietor spoke perfect English which probably means he has lived a good portion of his life in New York City. It is said here, to be very careful of any Dominican who can speak perfect English. Sometimes it means that they have grown up in New York City and possibly has been deported for crimes committed. Not alway true of course, but I am always wary nonetheless.

Dominicans enjoying the day on the beach.

A view of the beach to the El Batey side.

For very little money you can rent a lounge chair and an umbrella and gaze out at the sea. If you want the beach, but also want shade from the many trees you can set up at the back of the beach.

Walking the beach toward the El Batey side. El Batey is the portion of Sosua where most of the tourists and expatriates are. Los Charimicos is on the other side and is the home to most of the Dominicans. There are many Dominican families living in El Batey as well. Further to the west and also a part of Sosua is the area called Sosua Abajo.

A view from the water's edge back through the trees to the shops.

One of the many boats moving back and forth slowly near the water's edge.

From the Los Charimicos side of the beach.

Out to sea.

Stay Tuned!
