Travel Day
My 4:15 am wake up call woke me from a deep sleep and soon I was slumbering around the room getting a quick shower and dressed and dragging all my suitcases down to the lobby to catch the 5:00 am shuttle to the airport.
The check in line was long and I was worried that my two check bags would be overweight, but they passed inspection. Soon I and my computer backpack and carry-on suitcase were going through the irritating, but I guess necessary security area and finally I reached my gate.
The flight from St. Louis to Miami takes just under two hours. It was packed and the seats were as small and narrow as I can ever remember on a flight. It was cramped, claustrophobic and I was happy to reach Miami.
To get to my gate to catch the flight to Puerto Plata required about a 20-minute hike. Soon I was sitting in the gate area and waiting and waiting and waiting (2+ hours) for time to go. Finally we were all on board and taking off. The flight from Miami to Puerto Plata is actually shorter than the St. Louis to Miami leg. The seats were wider and the flight was not quite so cramped.
After landing at the Puerto Plata airport, customs was a breeze and soon I was outside. The first thing I noticed when I walked outside the airport is that it was warm ... no hot! Felt good.
My good friend Bruce was there to pick me up. Soon my bags were in the back of his car and we were making the 15-minute drive to Sosua and my new, little apartment (more on the apartment later with pictures).
After Bruce and I arrived at the apartment, my good friend Ed (from Allentown, Pennsylvania), who lives across the street, came over and it was like 'old home reunion' time.
Soon Ed, Bruce and myself were drinking cold Presidentes at a nice little cabana bar/restraunt called Bailey's. After awhile Bruce left to go home and Ed and I ordered dinner. I had baked chicken smothered in mushroom sauce, a baked potato and salad.
After dinner Ed and I stopped at two or three popular night spots along the main street in Sosua. Soon it was nearly midnight, I was worn out and it was time for bed.
Overall, a good day, a long trip, great times with old friends, warm weather, palm trees, colorful flowers, beautiful views of the ocean and tropical music. What more can a guy ask for?
